Mee Pok at Simpang Bedok

it is a well-known fact that i love the mee pok at the corner coffee shop in siglap but ever since they have upgraded to a coffee shop of their own near to my place, it has a greater attraction for me go there more often.

went there for my first breakfast back on wednesday (i carried my hunger over from the night before because i slept at 6pm and missed dinner) and my mom and dad said we should order the popiah while waiting for the mee pok because the queue is infamous. i think in my millions of times i have gone to the stall, i have never not had to wait at least 10minutes. once i waited 75minutes!

anyway, the kueh paiti and popiah...

the kueh paiti tasted rather sweet, which i personally didnt like. i think it was because i would have rather they use garlic chilli instead of whatever they used.

yes i'd have to admit the skin was nice, but i discovered that they didnt give stuff like peanut and sweet sauce and
lap cheong. a bit of a let-down. especially because the popiah was $1.50 a roll and the kueh paiti was $2 for 4. prefer the ones at Glory in katong and will go for a 'taste test' when i have my katong laksa and otah otah. hehehe...

*just found out that it's a Nonya popiah and the stall used to be from Rasa Singapura. some award-winning stuff. perhaps because it is Nonya that it tastes different?

anyway, the mee pok arrived a few minutes after we were done with our starters...

see the difference between $3 and $4? i had the $3 because i was going for sushi buffet with moon and tie later.

the reason why i love the
mee pok is because of the noodles - the uncle knows precisely how long to cook the noodles for them to be al dente (or QQ) before they get soggy. and his soup is nice too (though it has loads of MSG) and i think maybe he needs a bit more vinegar in his noodles (or perhaps that is how i like my noodles - which would explain why i love bak chor mee) because it was too salty.

btw, Encik Yusof bin Ishak makes a cameo in the second picture... :)

i'm wondering if the standard has gone down but it seems to not taste as amazing as i remember it used to in JC. i think i am knocking its ratings down from 5 stars to 4 1/2. sorry uncle...
