Warwick Uni and local institutes tie up to offer masters programme

By Jason Tan, Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE : The University of Warwick has not yet closed its doors to setting up a campus in Singapore.

One of its department heads says it will eventually come here.

Meantime, it has signed an agreement with two local educational institutes to start a new Masters of Science programme this year.

The Masters of Science in Engineering Business Management programme will be offered jointly by the University's Warwick Manufacturing Group, Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) and the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech).

To be conducted at the SIM campus at Clementi Road, it is aimed at improving Singapore's manufacturing sector.

"It's a powerful combination. This Masters programme is targeted very much at the manufacturing sector. I think this programme will help Singapore upgrade its manufacturing competitiveness," said SIM's CEO Lee Kwok Cheong.

The University of Warwick insists that this not an alternative option to opening a campus in Singapore.

"This is a wonderful opportunity and has nothing to do with what's happened between Warwick and Singapore, regarding the campus. The campus will probably come eventually, but because we can't wait for that to happen and so we moved," said Lord SK Bhattacharyya, Professor of Manufacturing and Director of Warwick Manufacturing Group.

Meanwhile, Singaporeans can have a taste of Warwick when the programme starts in July this year.
