first exam over... BUT OH BOY...

had my first exam today - film studies, which basically incorporated 2 terms of film history and one question on film criticism. i had studied 3 topics for autumn term's 'technology in film' and did a general overview of spring term's theme - musicals. plus for film crit i prepared Onegin for both portrayal of time and use of sound. so pretty much had it covered.

went in the hall and praise God... because the angles for the topics i studied came out. i had been looking at the contradictions of Dogme 95 in the manifesto and done analysis of 2 films in preparation, and last night i was on msn with iain and we talked about Dancer In The Dark and the representation of Richard Dyer's ideas of utopia in the film. looked at straightforward representation of time and use of sound in Onegin. and guess what? these are the questions that came out -

Section A:
"Are yhere any significant discrepancies between what the Dogme 95 manifesto says about film style and technology and the films which have been produced in accordance with its rules?"

Section B:
"What is 'utopian' about either Dancer In The Dark or Carlos Saura's version of Carmen?"

Section C:
"Discuss the use of sound in one of the following... Onegin"

so basically God was amazing! :)

but after the exam i was chatting with Emma and she told me her appraoch to the Dogme question and she compared 2 films with the manifesto and how they had discrepancies. what i did on the other hand was the say that there were inherent contradictions in the manifesto itself and based a lot of my essay on that and only mentioned one small point where i compared the films approved under Dogme and the manifesto. i am hoping that the examiners will see that i was challenging the context of the question and accept my answer. a bit worried but you know what? if God was so amazing to give me questions that i prepared for, He will see me through. and even if i dont do well in that question i will still praise Him for it.

though i have something embarrassing to say... i forgot the name of the main character in Dancer In The Dark. so the whole essay had me saying "Bjork's character... Bjork's character..." instead of "Selma". like OOOOOPPPPSSSS... hoping my tutors have a sense of humour...

2 more to go tomorrow and i am done with my first year...
